When the parents say "We are getting divorced"

by Teodora Marinova

Divorce - what is it? Is it just a separation between two people? No, I don't think so. Because the ones that suffer most are the children. "We are getting divorced" -1 think these are the most frightening words a child can hear. Every separation is more or
less painful. You feel divided in two, lonely, scared. The worst of all is seeing how
each day what seems like a small and insignificant dispute or disagreement turns
into a violent row. Your family, your life, your dreams are falling apart before your very own eyes. The word "divorce" brings up questions and unhappiness. Should I stay
and live with my Mum or with my Dad? What follows are rows again, courtrooms, lawyers. Finally they give the chile! to one of the parents. The other parent comes to visit only on holidays and vacations and sends birthday presents. And once again you feel divided in two. The child cannot take this and starts looking for ways to quell its sorrow. Unfortunately most often the ways involve drugs and alcohol.
The thought that until recently everything was normal, you had both a mother and a father and now it is no longer like that totally shatters the child's mind.
